Learning

Over the next couple of weeks our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the Bishops Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA).

The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment program that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) assessments.  The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum.  The test items in the BRLA are developed and mostly marked by the Office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). Formal school and student reports are produced by the CEWA for students in Year 5 and Year 9.

The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in RE.  Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items.  Students’ faith is not assessed.  The use of the BRLA complements the school-based assessment programs in RE.

Give 10 is a volunteer program for parents to complete ten hours of service to the school each year.  Good relationships are vital if Catholic schools are to achieve their aims.  Both parents and the school need to work at building constructive relationships.  Parents need to support the efforts of schools.  This is particularly the case in regard to their children’s religious and moral formation (social and personal) and to their developing sense of Christian vocation in the world.

Parents’ support is critical in the educational process.  Therefore, we urge parents to use the school processes and opportunities provided to facilitate their involvement in our Give 10 program here at SSP.  As a volunteer, parents are asked to assist in the daily life of the school undertaking tasks that assist the staff in the efficient and successful running of the school.  It provides teachers and the school with additional resources, that are necessary for an all-round education for our children and enables teachers to undertake their professional role.  There are many places where volunteers are needed within SSP from administrative to supportive such as the School Board, Friends of SSP, Parent days, Sports carnivals and the list goes on.  The difference with volunteering is a parent taking an active participation in their child’s education and primary school experience versus watching it from the sidelines.

We encourage all of our families from Kindergarten through to Year 6 to complete their ten hours of service per year.

  • Participate in classroom rosters, activities and excursions.
  • Attend functions and support special events held by the school.
  • Become involved with the Friends of SSP and the School Board.
  • Join rosters in the Canteen and Library.

We are particularly seeking volunteers to help us this term in the Uniform Shop and the Canteen.  If you are able to offer assistance in this regard, please email admin at admin@ssp.wa.edu.au so that your details can be provided to our Uniform Shop Manager, Rody, or our Canteen Manager, Trish.

Are you leaving SSP at the end of this year?

If you have a child in a class other than Year 6 and you will not be returning to SSP in 2019, you are required to advise us by the end of Term 3 to allow us to plan for 2019 and to contact the families on our waiting lists requiring places.  These details can be emailed to admin@ssp.wa.edu.au.

Please be reminded that the school’s policy requires that any student leaving the school needs to provide a term’s notice, in writing, addressed to the Principal.  Failure to provide sufficient notice may mean you will be liable to pay fees for Term 1 2019.

Accountability

If you are like many people you have probably caught at least a little bit of the football World Cup in Russia over the last few weeks.

Since, for a good portion of this year’s event, I was often in the company of soccer mad colleagues, I watched a bit more than I might usually do.  I was struck by the importance of half time.  Yes, it was an important break so that tired bodies get some rest and treatment, but I noticed it was also a significant time strategically.  This half time break meant that the other team had been more fully assessed, strengths and weaknesses could be reviewed, tactics modified and even substitutions made.  Many games were won because of the half time changes that were introduced making half-time an important reflective practice opportunity.

If you weren’t watching the football you were probably keeping an eye on what was happening on the other side of the world deep within a complicated cave system in Thailand.  What an amazing rescue!  In addition to experiencing the relief and elation when the rescue succeeded, I was struck by comments by leaders in the rescue team about how much they were able to refine and improve the rescue process as they went along.  The second and third rescue operations were faster and more efficient, as a result of what had been learned in earlier attempts.  In this case the first time rescue and the second time rescue were important reflective practice opportunities that enabled the third rescue to be even better than the earlier attempts, despite the changing weather and cave related circumstances that created more challenges.

So here we are at the end of ‘half time’ in the school year and I wonder what different tactics might be worth putting in place in the second half of the year?  Of course reflections like these need to lead to actions.  Football teams went out and played the second half putting into action their revised tactics.  Dive rescue teams went back for second and third rescue operations streamlining procedures to be more effective.  Schools have reflected and are putting their ideas into play for the second half of the year.

It is however, a helpful reminder that while reflection and review is critically important, it is acting on the learning from that reflection that changes the game here at SSP.

Discipleship

Congratulations to our Liturgical Dance Group!!!

Congratulations and well done to Kiara Calnon, Zahra Bryant, Venice Zoric, Meredith Dawson and Brianna Howell on the beautiful liturgical dance they presented at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival Opening Mass held at Infant Jesus’ Parish Morley.  The words from John Burland’s song, Anthem, reminds us to share our joy and our love for Jesus and celebrate our faith because together we can make a difference to everyone we meet.
