Over the past two weeks, students in Years 3 and 5 have undertaken annual NAPLAN testing. The school treats this as one of the important tasks that students need to complete, ensuring that proper protocols are in place and every opportunity is afforded to make the testing time as normal as possible. Currently, I am in Canberra attending the meeting of both the Australian Catholic Primary Principals Association and the Australian Primary Principals Association. Both associations have spoken about the need to replace the high stakes aspect of NAPLAN, and our approach attempts to follow this narrative. We don't want the testing to negatively impact students as it is one test in a moment of time. In many cases, the testing will verify the information that we already know but with the added comparison to the entire age group across Australia. The information from NAPLAN will hopefully be provided to schools in Term Two, with parent information becoming available towards the commencement of Term Three.
As we approach the last few days of Term One, we would like to remind you that Holy Week commences this week with Palm Sunday. This is a significant week in the liturgical calendar, and we welcome everyone to participate in the observances, especially through the parish. We will be conducting our own Holy Week observances that are relevant to students at their specific age levels.
Looking ahead, we want to make sure you have important dates for the start of next term. We will be resuming for Term Two on Monday, 15 April. Please mark this date on your calendar to ensure a smooth transition back to school for your child.
The second week of the term will see us commemorating Anzac Day, which falls on the Thursday. This is a significant day in our national calendar, and we will be engaging in activities that that properly acknowledge this significant day during Week Two and prior to the public holiday.
Additionally, please note that there is a scheduled pupil-free day on Friday, 26 April. This day has been set aside for staff professional development, and no classes will be held. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in planning for these dates.
Warm regards
Peter Cutrona

The Circle of Courage focus for Term 1 at SSP is ‘Belonging’ and our mantra is ‘I do belong.’ We strive to bring the Catholic faith to life within our school community by being respectful towards one another and by being a WESTIE (i.e., Welcoming, Encouraging, Say Sorry, Thank Others, Inclusive and Empathetic).
We also Greet with an open heart, Treat with respect and Speak with kindness.
Jesus taught us to speak with kindness and to show acts of kindness towards others. Jesus taught us to show respect towards one another.
We can make Jesus live through our actions and words.
Promote a discussion about making Jesus real by asking family members this:
‘Where did you see the Spirit of Jesus today?’

On Tuesday 19th March, students from Pre-Primary - Year 6 began running club this week. It was fantastic to see so many students attend the first session.
We look forward to seeing even more come along to improve their own personal health and fitness, in preparation for our school Cross-Country Carnival later in Term 2.
Term 2 is a very busy term on our sporting calendar. We have the Year 6 Lightning Carnival in week 9 Monday 10th June. We also have our school Cross Country Carnival which will be held in week 8, Friday 7th June. In preparation for the Cross Country, I have scheduled running club sessions on a Tuesday morning at 7.40-8.10am and Thursday after school 3.10pm- 3.40pm (Thursday sessions will begin in week 1 of Term 2). Parents and family members are welcome to participate, as this creates a fantastic community feeling and increases all students’ motivation levels.
Our school morning fitness sessions will also include cross country laps, where the students will collect pop sticks for each lap, which will help them keep track of their own personal tally, as they work towards potentially achieving a bronze, silver, or gold status certificate. My Waddell will award the top 5 students in each class, who achieve the most laps over term 2, with a gold certificate. Students who end up with the following 10 positions after the top 5, will achieve either a silver or bronze certificate.
The Cross- Country distances for Year 2 - Year 6 include:
- Year 2 will complete a 750 metre course.
- Year 3 will complete a 1500 metre course.
- Year 4 will complete a 2000 metre course.
- Year 5 will complete a 2500 metre course.
- Year 6 will complete a 2500 metre course.
Yours sincerely,
Zac Waddell

Last Friday the 8 March, St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School participated in the School House Swimming Carnival. It was a fantastic day and it was wonderful to see all the students compete so well and support each other throughout the day.
A huge congratulations goes to Prendiville House on winning the 2024 House Swimming Shield, just ahead of runners up Salvatorian House.
All students that attended should be extremely proud of the way they represented St Simon Peter. It was especially heart-warming to see the way the students cheered each other on and encouraged their peers in all events.
Each House competed extremely well. It was also wonderful to see Year 3 & 4 involved in the swimming carnival for their first time.
Thank you to all the parents that attended and volunteered. We honestly could not have run the carnival so smoothly without your support.
A special thanks to all staff in Years 3-6, along with specialist teachers that attended and assisted with helping all the students with their events.
A special thanks goes to Mr Thompson, who worked extremely hard, assisting me with putting the swimming program together. Throughout the day there were many outstanding performances which lead to first through to fourth place positions. Well-done to all students involved; a magnificent effort and one that they should be immensely proud of. Inter-school selection has started, and parents and students will be notified shortly if they have qualified.
Congratulations to the following Champion Boys and Girls and Runner up Champion Boys and Girls.

On Thursday 14th March, the Year 6’s had an incursion from the Pat Cronin Foundation. Pat Cronin was 19 years old when he passed away from unprovoked social violence, the foundation was created by his family to help ‘young Australians make wise decisions so we can end the senseless violence that devastates families and communities.’ You can read more about the foundation at https://patcroninfoundation.org.au/
Alan Latu came and presented an energetic piece with the take-home ‘Violence is never okay’. The students learned about anger as an emotion and aggression as a negative behaviour that is formed from unresolved anger. Discussions were also had around choices, consequences, and strategies the students can utilise to defuse conflict.
The students were guided to think of emotions like a balloon and everyday stressors inflate the balloon. If we don’t resolve the anger and stress that we feel, the balloon can pop, resulting in aggression or violence. The students all discussed ways of deflating their balloon of emotion (deep breathing, taking a walk, kicking a footy). The presentator commented on how aware the SSP students were at self-strategies and passed on his kind words.
