We have a change to the Year 5B classroom for Semester Two with Miss Mairead O'Farrell taking over as the classroom teacher for Mrs Trish Main who will be on leave for the remainder of 2024. We appreciate Miss O'Farrell for being willing to fill this important classroom teaching position and welcome her to our school community.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Duncan for stepping into the role of Year 6W teacher for Term 2. As we look forward to Term 3, we are pleased to announce the return of Mrs. Birks.
This week we also say farewell to one of our longest-serving staff members, Mrs Vicki Leonard. Vicki first became a member of the St Simon Peter School community when her children attended the school in 1988. As Vicki recounted to staff earlier this week, Sr Breda, the first Principal expected all parents to offer their time to support the school and that is how Vicki became involved. A few years later, Vicki was a paid staff member working one day per week and will finish this week as one of our two library technicians having spent the past 36 years as a parent and staff member of our school. We wish Vicki all the very best for what retirement now holds for her and her family. Mrs Chris Brein has been successful in securing the part time position in the library and is well known to most of our current school community. She will share the role with Mrs Boudewyns and will commence in the position at the commencement of Term Three.
We look forward to seeing everyone back safe and sound after the Term Two holidays on Tuesday 16 July.
Warm regards
Peter Cutrona

School Reports Information - Mid Year 2024
Catholic Education Western Australia directs Catholic schools as to reporting requirements. In 2023 there were some slight changes to the report format for the mid-year and end-of-year reports. In 2024 Year One and Two reports which will now display the same grade for each learning area in line with Years Three to Six.
Pre Primary grades are required to remain with descriptors for the grades for each learning area.
Reports will include:
- an overall grade for each learning area
- components graded in some learning areas
- an effort mark for each learning area
- self-management and awareness
- social-management and awareness
- a general comment
The achievement standards (A – E) describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, for the Mid-Year reports, teachers make a professional judgment concerning the year level Achievement Standard to that point in time. The End of Year report must reflect the achievement of the year-long Achievement Standards in each learning area/subject. An explanation of the achievement standards is below:
A: The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.
This should relate to not only understanding the skills and content but being able to describe, provide examples and use them in context.
B: The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.
This not only relates to understanding the skills and concepts but being able to explain them and provide examples.
C: The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
This is demonstrated by students' understanding of skills and concepts. They can solve a problem but may have difficulty in explaining why or in putting them into a different context ie Can solve two-digit multiplication but can’t explain how that may look in a real-life situation or explain the process to somebody else.
D: The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.
They struggle with understanding all the content taught during the semester. They may require assistance to complete work.
E: The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.
The student requires significant assistance to access the curriculum. Significant adult intervention is required.
You will notice that some learning areas have a teacher's name listed under the title, while others do not. If there's no name under the title, it means the teacher(s) listed on page 1 of the report are responsible for that area. If there is a name included, it suggests that a different teacher, either alone or in conjunction with those on page 1, has taught and reported on that area.

Ms. Mary, our Social Worker, recently visited our pre-primary classrooms to introduce the Catastrophe Scale, a valuable tool for helping children understand and manage their emotional responses. The Catastrophe Scale allows students to rate the size of their problems on a scale of Glitch to Catastrohpe, teaching them to differentiate between minor issues and significant challenges. This approach fosters better emotional regulation, literacy and appropriate response to stimuli, enabling children to handle their feelings more effectively.
During her engaging sessions, Ms. Mary used relatable examples and interactive activities to ensure the children grasped the concept. The introduction of the Catastrophe Scale has been a valuable addition to our term, providing our young students and parents with the skills to navigate their emotions confidently. We are excited to announce that Ms. Mary will be sharing this important tool with our Year 1 students next semester, further extending the benefits of emotional literacy across our school community.

The theme this year is Reading is Magic.
The Costume parade is scheduled for Wednesday 21st August. 9.00am
With our 2024 Children's Book Week theme; Reading is Magic, we're celebrating reading stories and their amazing power to transport minds. We are encouraging kids to be curious about the wonders in our world. It is a positive and affirming message for our young people. The magic of reading also lies in its power of enticement; a good story provokes conversations. Talking about the stories with others connects the reader with other readers. Wrapped around all of this are the "tricks" and skills of our amazing writers and illustrators, as they use all their powers of language and illustration to engage the reader in this world they are building.
Check out this video to help you get a feeling about the theme. https://youtu.be/kMokHCyJsjk

Play can happen anywhere and can be fun for baby and carers. A good, shared laugh is a mood booster!
Play Peekaboo: While sitting with baby, hide your face behind your hands or a blanket and then reveal it saying ‘Peekaboo’. This helps baby understand that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched.
Dance: Hold a dance party to a favourite song and dance with your little one. It improves motor skills and is a good way to be active together.
Play Hide and Seek with Toys: Hide a toy under a blanket and encourage your baby to find it. This teaches problem-solving skills.
Stacking blocks: Simple stacking toys or blocks, help develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Bubble Chase: Blow bubbles and let your baby try to catch or pop them. The movement and colours will captivate them.
Outdoor Exploring: Let your baby feel the grass, leaves, and flowers. You can also collect safe items like smooth stones or pinecones for them to explore.
Tummy Time on a Blanket: Lay a blanket on the grass and let your baby enjoy tummy time while looking at the sky, leaves, or toys. Talk out loud about what you see and hear.
Reminder - Traffic Management Procedures
- Please DO NOT PARK OR LEAVE YOUR CAR UNATTENDED whilst in the Kiss n Ride areas. If you need to go to the school, please use the car park. No parking on the footpath, this is monitored by the City of Joondalup Rangers.
- Please DO NOT PARK IN THE ALLOCATED DISABLED CAR BAYS unless you have an ACROD permit. These bays are monitored by the City of Joondalup Rangers.
- NO RIGHT TURN into or out of the school on Prendiville Avenue. This allows for safe movement around the school and continues traffic flow..
- At the 3.00 pm pick-up, please ensure that you are not jumping the queue by turning right in front of parents who have been sitting in the queue, sometimes for quite a while. Use the traffic circle and join the end of the queue.
- Please do not form a second queue at Senior or Junior Kiss n Ride. This causes traffic congestion at an already dangerous point with cars traveling back and forth and parents crossing the road amongst all the traffic. If required, do a loop around the block and re-join the back of the line.
- Once in the pick-up area, please move as far forward as possible into the next available bay, and always try to consider the parent behind you. Parents should not get out of their cars at any time.
- Staff supervises the Kiss n Ride areas as part of our duty of care – Instances of ‘car park rage’ or abuse directed to our staff will be reported and followed up with the School’s Leadership Team.
- Follow the CITY OF JOONDALUP FAQ regarding parking and movement around Prendiville College and St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School We thank you for your cooperation in using this procedure correctly and always ensuring the safety of children.
- The car park between the church and the school will remain closed for the movement of traffic between 3:00pm and 3:15pm each afternoon to allow the smooth and safe movement of traffic through the junior pick-up line. Parents and visitors are still able to park in this area but will be unable to enter or exit this space between the 15 minute window at the end of the school day.
- The lane leading down to the child care from Gate 1 is longer be open except for the movement of school vehicles. This has been undertaken due to safety concerns where both vehicles and pedestrians were using the same access. Gate One will remain partially open for pedestrian access only.
