Digital Transformation Leaders
Now that we have successfully implemented our 1:1 Device Program in Years 4 and 5 this year, we have put together a team of students; our Digital Transformation (DT) Leaders, who are called upon to support and share their knowledge and expertise to staff and students across the school.
Genius Bar
The DT Leaders also held our first Genius Bar during lunchtime last Thursday. Genius Bar is open to our 1:1 students, and is a time where they can learn more skills in a particular app and then apply this in the classroom. It was wonderful to see our Digital Technologies Leaders in action, offering their support for students on maximising the tools and features within iMovie. The session was a huge success with over 30 students attending! Well done Leaders!

In Week 9 last term, all staff participated in a Professional Development day on Making Jesus Real (MJR). MJR is not a program, but we hope to make it a way of life here at SSP.
The aim of MJR is for us all to acknowledge and live according to our Catholic tradition. We recognise that Jesus Christ is at the centre of every aspect of our daily lives by literally making Jesus Real through our actions, words and thoughts.
Your children may already have come home and talked to you about Spirit of Jesus moments. These are one of the greatest gifts we can give our children – the realisation that they have the spirit of Jesus in their hearts and they can recognise His spirit in others. Where have you seen the Spirit of Jesus today?
Examples of MJR activities:

They all had an amazing time, experiencing all of the fun activities the camp has to offer, including archery, caving, abseiling and the flying fox. We are sure many fond memories were made which will last a lifetime.
We would like to thank the Year 6 teachers for all of the planning involved in facilitating the camp and to say a special thanks to the parent helpers that came along to assist over the three days. We hope you all had a well earned rest over the weekend.

Why finishing 4th beats winning – Michael Grose
Everyone wants to win. We want it for ourselves. We want it even more for our kids. It’s great to see the smile of satisfaction on a child’s face after winning a game, a race or finishing on top of the pile in any endeavour. Winning feels good. It means they’re doing well. It’s equated with success. It’s a good habit to develop ... or so the theory goes.
But winning is just one part of the story.
Not finishing first carries emotion too, though it’s not necessarily positive. It’s good for kids to experience disappointment, annoyance and frustration just as its good for them to experience positive emotions. It’s good to learn when you are young that bad feelings happen, but they don’t last. This is a valuable life lesson. Not winning also teaches kids that there is a link between success and effort. It teaches them that perseverance pays off eventually. Helping kids to accept setbacks and unpleasant emotions, rather than blocking them out, is the key to building their resilience.
So if you have a child that continuously comes 4th (figuratively as well as literally) here are some strategies that you can focus on:
- Encourage liberally: Stanford University professor Carol Dweck (who has written a great deal on this very topic) encourages parents to use process praises: “You used smart strategies”, “You worked hard on that one”, “You thought long and hard to work that problem out”. She says this helps kids value effort and work for longer-term results.
- Focus on struggles, not just on victories: Your focus as a parent reveals your values. If you value effort and struggle then you need to be on the lookout for these so you can applaud them. If winning is all you value, then you’ll only focus on that. There is a choice here.
- Share stories of struggle and overcoming adversity: Whether it’s stories from your own life (kids love to hear about when their parents struggled) or stories from public news and sport, inspire and encourage your kids with the narratives of the struggles of others.
It’s easy as a parent to get caught in the winning trap. We sometimes just get carried along with the hype.
But maybe, just maybe, finishing 4th is better for kids in the long term than always being a winner.

The Facts of Funding in Australia
Parents are reminded that school begins at 8.45am each morning, with the classroom doors opening at 8.30am. Students should not arrive at school too early due to safety reasons. In recent times we have noticed some students arriving before 7.30am in the morning. With very few staff on site at this time of the day the safety of your child cannot be guaranteed by the school and with the gates open this is what I would consider an unsafe environment for students to be in and they are what could be described as being put at risk?
As a parent, why would you do this do I hear you say? Should you need to drop students off at school before 8.15am, then we offer a before school child care service through our Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) program here at SSP, available at very reasonable rates ($20.00 before the childcare rebate is applied) that would make it affordable for all.
Read LessSchool Uniform and Haircut Policies
Well done to everyone on switching to Winter Uniform this term – students have returned looking neat and tidy and proud to be a part of our school community. This is a general reminder that non-school jewellery that includes drop earrings, necklaces, bangles and "excessive over the top" hair accessories must comply with our school policy which is universal in all schools. This is a safety issue mainly when playing or taking part in PE sessions and games where all of these things can be dangerous and cause injury to others and themselves.
Please check the Parent Handbook if you are not sure about the policy which is on the school website and the SZ App.
Haircuts
Just a reminder that haircuts and styling of hair must comply with our school policy. Tracks and shaved-head style cuts are not acceptable at SSP during our school term. Long hair must be tied back at all times.
We thank you for your co-operation.
