Healthy Lifestyle iMovies by Year 1 Blue
Over the first few weeks of this term, students in 5W helped their buddies in 1B create an iMovie project about healthy lifestyles and healthy eating using their iPads.
The Year 5s showed the Year 1s how to record, edit, insert images and music into iMovie. It was a really rewarding experience, with the Year 5s learning how to instruct and teach without taking control of the iPad, and the Year 1s learnt how to make interesting movies about being healthy!
We hope you enjoy taking a look at one of the excellent examples we have provided below:

On Tuesday 4 June, all staff from SSP spent the morning visiting other schools. Staff travelled to a variety of metropolitan schools including Good Shephard Kelmscott, St Vincent’s Parmelia, St Luke’s Woodvale, Padbury Catholic and Joondalup Support Centre to name a few.
We as a staff are highly aware of the need to be lifelong learners and this was a perfect opportunity to learn from other good schools and share our ideas with them.
On Friday 28 June, we celebrate MJR Day, formerly SSP Day. As SSP is focusing on Making Jesus Real (MJR) and celebrating Spirit of Jesus moments, we wanted to recognise the generosity shown during our stalls on that day. The money that is raised is shared amongst Catholic agencies, various causes and those that are in need. This is making Jesus real!
The plan for the day is:
Free dress day for a gold coin donation.
8.45am – 10.50am | Normal class routines. |
11.15am – 12.45pm | Classroom activities focussing on MJR and generosity. Students will rotate through the 3 classes in their year level. |
1.30pm – 2.40pm | Stalls in the quadrangles and oval. Parents and families are welcome to join us. |

In the April school holidays, a group of five staff members visited our new Bali sister school, SD2 Mengwi. This relationship has been in the planning stages for over a year, with this visit enabling us to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two schools.
During this visit our staff taught some lessons, visited family villages and spent time in the school getting to know the students and staff. We were able to provide the students with some sports equipment from money raised by selling coffees to staff. A Sister School Project Committee, comprising of staff members and parents, are currently working on future plans for this sister school relationship.
Pak Lamont is currently raising money through becak rides for students in the junior years. The becak is a form of Indonesian transport – used for short journeys.
Any student in Years 1 & 2 can purchase a ticket from the ICC (Ignite Coffee Club - located in the Ignite room opposite the Indonesian room) on Tuesday and Friday mornings before school. Tickets cost 50c.
All proceeds go to our sister school in Bali – SD2 Mengwi. The becak drivers are Year 5 students who have all passed their drivers course and have a becak license.
Parent TV - How to Teach Children Self-Control
Self-control is an attribute that predicts success in school, work, relationships – life.
But how do we teach self-control to our children?
Dr Justin Coulson is a Psychologist, Speaker and Author and will go through how to teach self-control to our kids in the latest Parent TV video:
We have been experiencing very high absentee rates over the past three weeks of school due to sickness and students taking holidays. I have attached a document from the Health Department that outlines some information on communicable diseases for parents, staff and students. I hope you find this helpful.
Just a reminder that, for the benefit of the school community, it is in all of our best interests if sick children are not sent to school or childcare, nor returned to school early whilst still showing signs and symptoms of illness. Please do not be offended if you are contacted by the School Nurse to pick up your sick child. Please note that the nurse is not a GP and will not diagnose or prescribe medicines to your child. This is the job of a trained medical doctor.
Cases of Influenza A and B are reported to the Health Department by your GP. The school does have child safe and hygienic practices in place just as you do at home, so together we strive to maintain a clean and healthy school environment.

As this is the last year that our current Book Club Co-ordinators, Sarah and Kylie, will have children attending SSP, they will no longer be organising the Scholastic Book Club for us.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sarah and Kylie for all of their hard work over the years in facilitating this service for our school community.
We are now looking to find two new volunteers who are able to take on the role of Book Club Co-orindators. There are only two orders per year (in 2nd and 4th term), so it is not a huge job. Sarah and Kylie have offered to train up any new volunteers before they relinquish their duties.
If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please contact our admin office via email to admin@ssp.wa.edu.au or phone 9301 6888. If you would like to find out what the job entails, we can arrange for you to join Sarah and Kylie when they sort out this Term's order this Thursday, 13 June 2019 from 9.30am to 1.30pm.
They will also be available in Term 4 to show the whole process.
We look forward to hearing from anyone willing to become the new co-ordinators. Thank you in anticipation.

We have recently had some complaints from parents using our Kiss n Ride facilities. The main complaint is that of cars spending too long in the Kiss n Ride space – chatting, parking up, doing children’s hair, finding the drink bottle and answering the phone! The Kiss n Ride is exactly that – get in and get out quickly…oh and kiss your child! Thank you for your continued patience and co-operation in keeping our students safe at SSP.
Please click on the relevant links below to access invitations to events that our HOPE Representatives have organsed for our School community for this term. It would be lovely for you to attend and enjoy a relaxing get together with other families in your year groups.

Thank you to those parents who have been able to attend the last two Friends of SSP meetings.
Following feedback from participants after our recent FSSP Executive Meeting, it was decided that going forward we will have one meeting per term. Please note that this means there is a change of date for our next meeting General Meeting, which will now take place in Term 3 on Monday 5 August at 7.00pm. Please note this date in your calendars.
This meeting will be in the Indonesian Room here at SSP, with our guest presenter Jamie Lamont (Indonesian Teacher). We will have someone directing you on the night to the Indo Room from the Hub which is our normal meeting place.
Jamie will be outlining his program that has really made an impact at SSP within just three short years of its operation. He will also be updating us on our Sister School project with SD 2 Megwi in Bali. Exciting times!
Read LessSt Simon Peter has been running DRUMBEAT for four years with a large number of students having participated in the program.
Last week we celebrated the conclusion of another successful program with a performance for parents. DRUMBEAT is a fun and interactive program that has proved to be very effective in schools. Students talk and drum about their emotions, attitudes and thoughts. It helps students to establish and build positive relationships in an innovative, engaging and memorable way. Independent research indicates that the program can lead to:
- Better self-esteem, sense of belonging, co-operation and emotional stability;
- Decreased behavioural incidents, stress and anxiety;
- Improved attendance, academic performance, relationships and interaction with others.
Students from our Year 6 grade and a few lucky Year 5s represented our school at the annual NIPSSA Winter Lightning Carnival last Thursday at the Kingsway Sporting Grounds.
There were six teams involved in five different Winter sports (boys’ and girls’ AFL, boys’ and girls’ soccer and netball). They all played a large number of games over the course of the day against teams from seven other schools.
All of the teams performed very well, but a special mention should be made of the boys’ AFL team (inspired by Hayward Hurter’s incredible three goals and two points burst!) who won every game and the boys’ soccer team who were undefeated over the whole day.
Special thanks also to the parent helpers and coaches and to the Year 5 and year six teaching staff who helped prepare the teams for this carnival.
Beginning in Term 3, Veronika Battersby will have two spots available for group keyboard lessons. Please note that this is for students in Years 2-6 ONLY.
If you are interested, please call Veronika on 0403 304 585 before 18 June (as she will be heading overseas that day and will not be back until the end of July) or email: the_muso@iinet.net.au.
Thank you.
