Catholic Primary Principals Association Day 2019
“He who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” (Cotton)
At SSP we aim to base our learning design around current research and what is deemed best practice based on this research. The Leadership Team recently attended the Catholic Primary Principals Association Day which included a Key Note address from Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa Ph.D. The Keynote was titled ‘How Neuromyths Create Opportunities in Education: Change begins with attitude'.
Tracey shared with us the latest neuroscience research, debunked popular educational myths and provided 14 best teacher practices linked to what we know about the brain. This was an insightful day that will no doubt provide further learning for staff and students going forward.

Excursions are a well-known brain-compatible learning strategy. At SSP our students are fortunate enough to participate in many excursions. On Tuesday 31 July the Year 4 classes travelled to the Perth Zoo to participate in a Zoo Education programme. We attended a guided session learning about how African animals adapt in the wild. The lesson included looking at structural and behavioural adaptations of the animals.
Our Pre-Primary students visited the Beaumaris Shopping Centre on Wednesday 31 July. The children went around the different shops to discuss what happens at each retailer. Bakers Delight took the children on a tour of the bakery and taught them how to make scrolls. They received fairy bread and a goodie bag to take home. Afterwards, each group purchased a select ingredient from IGA and soon the children learned all the ingredients combined are used to make gingerbread men. This was used as the provocation for our new Talk for Writing story ‘The Gingerbread Man.’
In Year 1 we count every day we have been at school using straws/charts/tallies/base ten blocks and when we reach 100 days, which was in Week 1, the children celebrated getting to their first group of 100 by wearing their PJs.
During the day the children participate in activities involving numbers to 100. For example, Class 1White made 100 chart snakes and ladders, 100 chart jigsaw, building with 100 cups, building with 100 Lego blocks or just blocks, playing 100 games on the ipad/using an aging app!!/playing 100 chart games and colouring in 100 day smarter placemats/bookmarks/crowns….just lots of activities revolving around place value and the number 100. The children love it.

Suggestions for dressing up are a super hero or your favourite book character. Reading is our secret power of magic, adventure, knowledge and imagination. Keep it simple and inexpensive.
