Recently updated concussion guidelines for youth and community sports have been released. These guidelines immediately affect how schools must manage concussions or suspected concussions, both within the school environment and for children recovering from concussions sustained outside of school. All schools are required to comply with the Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport. A copy is attached below for your benefit.
Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport
Students returning to school after a concussion (whether it occurred at school, during a school-related activity, or elsewhere) will need a gradual return to learning and physical activity before full participation. This will involve documenting adjustments and supports for both learning and physical activity at school, which may include reduced hours of attendance and limitations on certain activities.
A healthcare practitioner must assess any child suspected of having a concussion. If a concussion is diagnosed, the school must implement new protocols. For details, please refer to page 10 of the above document.
Parents and guardians must inform the school nurse, who will serve as the school concussion officer, of any concussion diagnosed by a healthcare practitioner before their child returns to school. This allows for the creation and implementation of an appropriate plan. Please send a copy of any written diagnosis and instructions from the healthcare practitioner to the school nurse via the school office. Following this process will ensure all communication goes through the school office email or contact sheet, not directly to the nurse.
As these are new protocols and procedures for our school, we will take a cautious and methodical approach to handling any diagnosed concussion case.
The associated website has some great resources and videos for reference.
It can be accessed at https://www.concussioninsport.gov.au/parents_and_teachers.
The Annual Community Meeting will be held on Tuesday 26 November 2022, commencing at 6.00 pm. The meeting will provide feedback to our school community on the school improvement plan for 2024 and what is planned for 2025, release staffing information for 2025, conduct elections of members to the SAC and FSSP, as well as the presentation of the budget and school fees for 2025.

Message From Ms. Mary - Embracing The Ups And Downs
As the school year comes to an end, many of us are feeling a mix of emotions. School reports are coming home, class lists are being released, and those highly anticipated leadership roles are being announced. And as parents, we’re right there with them feeling the excitement, the relief and the natural disappointments.
Disappointment is hard, seeing our kids hurting is hard and as parents we instantly want to fix it. However, without a bit of disappointment, our kids miss out on the chance to build resilience (the golden goose of traits!). They need to feel it, to process it, to learn that it’s okay to be disappointed sometimes.
So, if your child comes home upset that they didn’t get the grades they hoped for or missed out on a leadership role, it’s okay to sit with them in that feeling. Try saying something like, “Yeah, that’s super disappointing kiddo. It’s okay to feel sad. I’m right here with you.” You don’t have to fix it. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is just listen and acknowledge how they’re feeling.
Disappointment is a tough but a necessary teacher. It’s a reminder that we don’t always get what we want, and that’s okay. It’s how we learn patience and how we keep moving forward. When our kids face setbacks, let’s focus on the effort they put in, not just the outcome. Not every kid is going to win the race, make the team or become the leader and it is our job to remind our kids that their worth is not based on those things. Our SSP students, tackle some tough challenges every single day inside and outside school and they’re all little legends in my eyes, no matter their achievements. It's super important to celebrate their courage and determination during the process, not just the end result.
Let’s also acknowledge that the end of the school year is exhausting for kids and parents. You might be seeing more meltdowns or mood swings, and that’s completely normal. My advice? Don’t rush to fix it and just be there. You might say, “I can see you’re feeling overwhelmed. It’s been a big year, and it’s okay to be tired, cranky and over it. Why don’t we cool down our hot cup of Milo and take a minute.”. Cooling down our hot Milo is a breathing technique most kids in the school are aware of now, long slow deep breaths out to help us feel relaxed.
And lastly, our kids learn so much by watching us. When was the last time you said out loud that you were disappointed? Try it next time something doesn’t go your way - “I was really hoping for that to work out, but it didn’t, and that’s disappointing. I’m going to sit with that for a bit, but I know it’ll pass.”
Disappointment is a part of life, and it’s nothing to be afraid of. Every feeling has its place, and they’re all temporary. So, let’s embrace all the highs, lows and everything in between as we reach the end of 2024.
You’ve got this – and so do they.

Our students at St. Simon Peter have kicked off another action-packed term in sport, with plenty of energy and enthusiasm across all year levels!
Cricket Skills in the Spotlight
This term, students have been working hard to refine their cricket techniques, focusing on the key skills of bowling, batting, and fielding. Through a series of modified, fast-paced cricket games, they’ve had plenty of opportunities to put their skills to the test in real game scenarios.
Introducing Speedball: A New Challenge!
In an exciting twist, students have been introduced to the dynamic sport of Speedball. This game combines elements of throwing, catching, and soccer, offering a fun and fast-paced way to develop teamwork and agility. In Speedball, players can run with the ball but must pass it within three seconds, adding a level of strategy and quick decision-making. The highlight? Scoring goals by either throwing or kicking the ball into small soccer goals, defended by goalkeepers.
It’s been an exciting start to the term, with our students embracing new sports, improving their skills, and working together as teams. We look forward to more action and growth as the term progresses!

Uniform Changes
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families who participated in the recent uniform survey. With a total of 322 responses, it is clear that uniform policies are a significant concern for our community, and we appreciate your engagement.
We are excited to announce some upcoming changes to our school uniform that aim to better reflect our school spirit while ensuring comfort and practicality for our students. Here are the key updates:
New Uniform Items
- White Shirt: The beige shirt will be replaced by a crisp white shirt.
- Bomber Jacket: Starting in 2026, a stylish bomber jacket will take the place of the current jumper.
Phase-Out Plan
- Current Uniforms: Students will continue wearing the existing uniforms until stock runs out. We anticipate that new uniforms will be fully integrated by the end of 2027.
Changes Starting in 2025
- Kindergarten to Year 1: A compulsory sports uniform will be introduced, which includes sport socks and enclosed predominately white or black Velcro sport shoes.
- Formal Uniforms: All formal uniforms will require shirts to be tucked in, along with formal black shoes for both summer and winter; sneakers and sandals will no longer be permitted.
- Girls' Options: Girls will have the option to wear the boys' maroon shorts or maroon pants.
- Winter Attire: The winter pinafore will be phased out and replaced with a plaid skirt or plaid skort, paired with the new shirt.
- Maroon Rain Jacket: This item will no longer be available for purchase.
- Summer Dresses: Once the current stock of summer dresses is sold out, girls will transition to the new plaid skirt or skort.
- Maroon Skort: Starting from Term 4, the maroon skort will not be available for sale and will be replaced by the plaid skirt or skort.
- Beige Socks and Stockings Sale: We will hold a sale on beige socks and beige stockings for girls. Once this stock is depleted, only sport socks and black stockings will be available.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we implement these changes to enhance our school uniform policy. Our aim is to foster a sense of unity and pride within our school community while ensuring that our students are comfortable and well-prepared for their school day.
Thank you for your continued support!
