After 12 months of planning, we introduced a personalised key system for each early learning centre family to access the ELC using a unique key through a secure app. Families using the OSHC services will also receive credentials to download the app as we switch to the new system in the coming weeks. This new system will replace the manual code locks at Gates 1 and 2.
This change improves safety, as the current locks only have one combination, which can be shared too widely. Each family will have a unique code that works only on the days they use the service. This ensures we comply with licensing requirements and that only those dropping off or picking up children from the OSHC have access.
During 2025 the school will be reviewing our current communication strategy to determine if the ways communication operates within our school is appropriate for the needs of our school community. Reviewing our current communication strategy is important for several reasons:
- Ensuring that our messages are clear and reaching the intended audience.
- Improving how we engage with students, parents and staff to foster a stronger school community.
- Gathering feedback to understand the needs and preferences of our community.
- Adapting to new communication tools and platforms that may be more efficient.
- Making sure our communication methods are accessible to everyone, including those with different needs or language preferences.
- Maintaining a consistent message across all platforms to avoid confusion.
By reviewing and updating our strategy, we can better meet the needs of our school community both now and in the foreseeable future. This work will initially sit with the Catholic School Advisory Council and develop over 2025 so we can have a clear and concise plan to implement towards the end of the school year.
Next week, we begin Lent with Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday observed at school. On Wednesday, we will have Mass where children will receive ashes as a sign of repentance and preparation for the 40 days leading up to Easter.
In Australia, children under the age of 14 are not required to fast or abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday. The fasting and abstinence rules apply to Catholics aged 14 and older, so they do not impact our primary school students.
Thank you to the small but willing FSSP (Friends of St Simon Peter- Our version of the school P&F) committee that organised the Welcome Picnic last Friday. All those in attendance certainly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the company of the families in attendance.
Currently, the FSSP are looking for other volunteers to join them on their committee to assist in organising events for the school during 2025. If you are willing to assist in this endeavour and to find out more about what this may entail then use the contact form link here and your details will be passed on to the current committee members.
Have a great Labour Day long weekend!
Peter Cutrona
Principal
Please see the schoolwide behaviour matrix below.
We have designed the matrix to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all students.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing these values at home.
SSP has Medical/Illness Protocols in place to ensure the health and safety of all students, staff, and visitors.
These protocols help prevent the spread of illnesses within the school community by ensuring that children who are unwell stay home until they are no longer contagious.
This reduces the risk of outbreaks and helps maintain a healthy learning environment.
Additionally, having clear guidelines allows the school to respond appropriately in case of medical emergencies and ensures that all students receive the necessary care and attention. These are not a definitive list but a guideline to help parents make informed decisions regarding their child. Follow the link below or view on our website under SSP Family.

Reminder - Traffic Management Procedures
- Please DO NOT PARK OR LEAVE YOUR CAR UNATTENDED whilst in the Kiss n Ride areas. If you need to go to the school, please use the car park. No parking on the footpath, this is monitored by the City of Joondalup Rangers.
- Please DO NOT PARK IN THE ALLOCATED DISABLED CAR BAYS unless you have an ACROD permit. These bays are monitored by the City of Joondalup Rangers.
- NO RIGHT TURN into or out of the school on Prendiville Avenue. This allows for safe movement around the school and continues traffic flow..
- At the 3.00 pm pick-up, please ensure that you are not jumping the queue by turning right in front of parents who have been sitting in the queue, sometimes for quite a while. Use the traffic circle and join the end of the queue.
- Please do not form a second queue at Senior or Junior Kiss n Ride. This causes traffic congestion at an already dangerous point with cars traveling back and forth and parents crossing the road amongst all the traffic. If required, do a loop around the block and re-join the back of the line.
- Once in the pick-up area, please move as far forward as possible into the next available bay, and always try to consider the parent behind you. Parents should not get out of their cars at any time.
- Staff supervises the Kiss n Ride areas as part of our duty of care – Instances of ‘car park rage’ or abuse directed to our staff will be reported and followed up with the School’s Leadership Team.
- Follow the CITY OF JOONDALUP FAQ regarding parking and movement around Prendiville College and St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School We thank you for your cooperation in using this procedure correctly and always ensuring the safety of children.
The following are new procedures from the commencement of the 2024 school year.
- The car park between the church and the school will remain closed for the movement of traffic between 3:00pm and 3:15pm each afternoon to allow the smooth and safe movement of traffic through the junior pick-up line. Parents and visitors are still able to park in this area but will be unable to enter or exit this space between the 15 minute window at the end of the school day.
- The lane leading down to the child care from Gate 1 will no longer be open except for the movement of school vehicles. This has been undertaken due to safety concerns where both vehicles and pedestrians were using the same access. Gate One will remain partially open for pedestrian access only.

Read LessAt St Simon Peter, we are committed to the safety and well-being of our students. To achieve this, we’ve implemented the “Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum,” which empowers children with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from abuse. Your involvement in continuing these discussions at home is essential, as it reinforces what they learn at school and helps build a strong foundation for their safety. Together, we can ensure our children grow up confident and secure.
One important focus area of the curriculum is “Recognising and Reporting Abuse.” Here are some key points to help guide your conversations with your child:
- Using Correct Body Part Names: Encourage your child to know and use the correct names for all body parts, including private ones. Open communication helps remove taboos and empowers children to speak up if they feel uncomfortable.
- Respecting Boundaries: Teach your child that their body is private, and no one has the right to touch them without permission. Help them understand the difference between safe and unsafe touch.
- Empowering Assertiveness: Encourage your child to say “No” or “Stop it” if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable with any form of touch.
- Recognising Abuse: Discuss the different forms of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect) and help your child recognise warning signs, such as being hurt, witnessing abuse, or receiving inappropriate touches.
- Seeking Help: Make sure your child knows who they can turn to for help in the community, such as trusted adults like police officers, shopkeepers, or bus drivers.
- Internet Safety: Teach your child how to use the internet safely and responsibly, and remind them not to share personal information online.
- Safe and Unsafe Secrets: Explain the difference between safe secrets (e.g., surprise gifts) and unsafe secrets (e.g., sexual touching or threats). Encourage them to share any concerns with a trusted adult.
By working together, we can create a safe and supportive environment for all our students. Thank you for your ongoing support in this important initiative.

Prendiville is thrilled to announce that Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, a renowned parenting educator, best-selling author, and international speaker, will be joining them as a guest speaker at Prendiville!
Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is a mum, parenting educator, best-selling author, international speaker, and a regularly invited media guest. She holds a doctoral degree in psychology, and practiced as a psychologist for nearly 20 years, before devoting her full-time energy to connecting with parents and other “big people” around the globe in 2023. Founder of The North Star Developmental Clinic, Dr. Vanessa has long been supporting families and children in her developmental clinic alongside her team and has previous experience in community mental health and the school system. Dr. Vanessa is known for bringing a sense of nurturing understanding and humanity to all of her work. Her passion is in walking alongside parents, teachers, care providers, and other big people to really see the world through the child’s eyes. She believes that if we can do this, we are beautifully positioned to grow up our children in the best possible way.
Overview of the presentation:
Resilience is a characteristic that is often talked about as so important for kids, but how do we foster it in children without sending them to the “school of hard knocks’? There is so much confusion out in the child raising world about this concept of resilience. Words like “grit” and “growth mindset” and “mental toughness” have become part of what we are told will allow kids to be successful as adults. But what does this all really mean? And do we run the risk of sinking a child’s ship if we get too focused on honing their resilience? Dr. Vanessa will help parents explore how much is too much, and also when they might be doing a child a disservice by overly softening the blows of life. She will share with parents how to stay ever focused on growing a child who is hardy, not hardened, and finding the balance along the way.
