Music And Performing Arts

Classroom Music

At St Simon Peter, all students participate in weekly classroom music lessons. During these sessions, they learn to sing, play, respond to, and create music. Students in Years 3 to 5 focus on learning the recorder, while Year 6 students concentrate on the ukulele.

Instrumental Music

Our instrumental music program operates during school hours on a rotational timetable. Tutors invoice parents directly for each child’s lessons, ensuring that each student receives a minimum of 32 lessons throughout the school year. Students in Years 3 to 6 can begin lessons on any of the following instruments, which lead directly into our school band program:

• Flute
• Clarinet
• Saxophone
• Trumpet
• Trombone
• Euphonium (Tenor Horn)
• Percussion

Additionally, we offer private tuition in the following instruments, which do not lead into our school band:

• Guitar
• Piano
• Violin
• Drums

All our tutors are dedicated to developing each student’s potential and will encourage participation in events such as the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, the St. Simon Peter Music Concert, and other performance opportunities.

St Simon Peter School Band

Students who reach the required level of performance on a band instrument are invited to join the St Simon Peter School Band, which rehearses after school. There is no charge to participate in the band, which performs at school assemblies and may enter the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, depending on the performance skills of the members.

St Simon Peter School Choir and Music Ministry

The School Choir is open to students in Years 4 to 6 and rehearses before school. Choir members work collaboratively to perform at the Catholic Arts Festival, the School Music Concert, and in the School Musical. Each year, the choir also aims to give back to the community by presenting a Christmas show for aged care residents.

Additionally, the St Simon Peter Music Ministry choir, which runs during lunchtime for students in Years 3 to 6, focuses on liturgical singing. This choir also participates in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival each year and sings at school masses and parish events.

Performing Arts

At St Simon Peter, we take pride in our Performing Arts Program. Every two years, we run a musical for students in Years 5 and 6, with rehearsals taking place after school and the final performance held at the Redmond Theatre at Prendiville College. In the alternate years, depending on student interest, we also offer Dance and Christian Dance programs after school.

Students are selected each year to present their items in the Catholic Arts Festival. St Simon Peter has a history of success, having been awarded the Shield for Musical Theatre performance three times, as well as the Shield for Christian Dance.
