Literacy & Numeracy Support
At St Simon Peter School, we are dedicated to enhancing our students' learning experiences through specialized Literacy and Numeracy support. Our Support Team, comprised of specialist teachers and Educational Assistants, is committed to delivering effective intervention programs aimed at accelerating the progress of identified students.
Key Components of Our Support Program:
- Collaboration and Communication: We prioritize collaboration between our Support Team and classroom teachers to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to student support.
- Early Intervention: In line with best practices, early intervention is our primary focus. However, we offer support groups throughout all year levels to meet the diverse needs of our students.
- Professional Collaboration: Our Support Team regularly partners with external professionals, including speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, tutors, and The Language Development Centre, to provide holistic support.
- Screening and Monitoring:
- In the Kindy and Pre-Primary years, we conduct Speech and Occupational Therapy screenings for each child to identify potential needs early on.
- All students are consistently monitored through our Screening & Testing policy, which is implemented across all year levels.
- Annual meetings are held to facilitate the transfer of students between classes, ensuring that teachers are informed of any intervention strategies previously employed. This practice maintains continuity in support from year to year.

Current Programs Offered:
- MiniLit:
MiniLit is an intensive, effective early literacy intervention program designed for small groups of students in Years 1 to 3. This synthetic phonics-based program targets students who find reading and writing challenging. Through MiniLit, students learn to identify all 44 sounds in the English language and apply these sounds to read and spell accurately. This program complements the whole-class program of InitiaLit in Years 1 and 2, forming part of the MultiLit suite of reading programs.
- MacqLit:
MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program tailored for small groups of older low-progress readers. Like MiniLit, it emphasizes recognizing and utilizing the 44 sounds in the English language to read and spell words, while also helping students break down multi-syllabic words. MacqLit encompasses all key components necessary for effective reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
At St Simon Peter School, we believe that every student has the potential to succeed, and our Literacy and Mathematics Intervention programs are designed to support them on their educational journey.
