Outside School Hours Care
St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School operates an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program to meet its community’s needs. Our program operates within the Catholic ethos of the school offering a play and leisure-based program for children outside of the normal school hours. The service can provide any or all combinations of before school, after school, pupil free days and vacation care for children in Kindy to Year Six.
We aim to provide a physically safe and emotionally secure environment where your child can explore, socialise and expand their interests through a variety of artistic, physical and social activities and interactions with peers. Our highly trained and experienced educators provide an interactive and fun program that respects children’s choice. OSHC provides a place where children can play, relax and pursue their interests in a safe, caring and stimulating environment.
At St Simon Peter Outside School Hours Care, we believe it takes a village to raise a child and view ourselves as an important part of your village. We create this sense of community by caring for the whole family, through our relationships and environment. We work collaboratively with families and believe that the children benefit when there are strong links between home, the Service and School. Our philosophy is based on the image of the child as strong, capable, inquisitive and creative.
Our primary focus is developing strong, trusting and respectful relationships with our children. We recognise that children are a unique gift from God and we treat them with the dignity that God intended. Through our program, we support children to develop a sense of respect for themselves, others and the environment around them. The connection between the Service and the children is paramount as they are the heart and voice of the program. Children are supported to develop positive peer relationships that foster their sense of wellbeing at the Service. We honour every child’s individual ideas, strengths and differences. We believe in seeing the whole person and that mind, body and spirit are of equal importance. We aim to provide for the needs of every child and be a positive agency in their growth and development.
St Simon Peter Outside School Hours Care is an integral part of the community that is encompassed by St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School. We maintain positive partnerships with our school, the Early Leaning Centre and the supplementary programs to encourage positive transitions for each child. We believe that our Service should be grounded in our local community and reflect their history, culture, language and traditions. Our wide range of excursions and incursions during our Vacation Care program always put our local businesses first and encourage involvement with the families in our community. We live our School motto ‘Love One Another’ by showing care, respect and empathy to everyone who comes through our door and the world around us.
Families and Partnerships:
We recognise families as the children’s primary nurturers and first and foremost teachers and therefore strive to support our families in whatever way we can. We work collaboratively with families and believe that the children benefit when there are strong links between home and the Service. We believe relationships are the foundation for successful partnerships and understand that successful relationships are built on trust, open communication, collaboration and respect. We recognise that all children and families are unique and have their own character, values and traditions. We strive to provide regular opportunities to honour the family’s role by encouraging them to share their family values and experience with us.
We believe children learn through play and experimentation and that play and leisure provide opportunities for children to discover, create, improvise and imagine. Children are provided opportunities for individual play, building their independence in a safe and nurturing environment. Additionally, children are supported to develop positive socialisation skills and play with others to create social groups, test out ideas, challenge each other’s thinking and build new understandings. Play provides a supportive environment where children can ask questions, solve problems, engage in critical thinking, be imaginative and have fun.
Learning and Reflective Practice:
We understand that children are capable and active contributors to their own learning. Children’s individualities are the heart of our program; therefore, our program and environments are based on a child centered approach and built from the children’s ideas, skills and strengths. We reflect as part of an ongoing cycle to ensure we are continually striving for excellence. We constantly reflect on our practices, ensure the best interests of the children and needs of the families are being met. Educators are active learners and constantly strive to improve their practice through ongoing professional development. We have a unique team of educators with their own set of strengths and skills that provides children with a diverse program that is engaging for all.
We endeavor to create a warm, welcoming, nurturing and familial home like environment that caters for the whole child, providing opportunities for self-discovery, awe and wonder. Our environment reflects our view that each child is strong, capable, confident and inquisitive by providing opportunities for children to explore their sense of identity, develop leadership skills, drive the program and have ownership over their environments at our Service. The environment provides opportunities for children to take risks and build upon their resilience and self-growth. We believe it is our duty to provide a safe and healthy environment that gives children a strong sense of self, belonging and provides for their mental and physical wellbeing. Our environments and programs promote a healthy lifestyle and life skills. Children are encouraged to explore the natural environment around them and understand their contribution to its maintenance and prosperity. Children are provided with an environment and resources that create a sense of wonder and encourage children to explore, investigate and grow to become confident and involved learners.
Our philosophy is underpinned by the ECA Code of Ethics, UN Rights of the Child, My Time Our Place and National Quality Framework.
The OSHC Program follows the My Time Our Place Framework for school aged care and complies with the National Quality Framework. The frameworks acknowledge the importance of exploration, play and leisure in children’s learning and development and that their learning is not limited to any particular time or place. Developing life skills and a sense of enjoyment are emphasised through the framework and reflected in our program. The framework recognises the importance of communication, language, social and emotional development. The framework ensures children have opportunities to engage in leisure and play-based experiences which are responsive to their needs, interests and choices.

To help you with the cost of your child care, the Australian Government provides the following assistance:
Child Care Subsidy
The Australian Government provides financial assistance in the form of Child Care Subsidy (CCS) to eligible families to help cover the cost of child care. CCS is paid directly to the service, who then pass this on to families in the form of fee reductions. Families will then pay the difference between their subsidy and the fees charged.
Child Care Subsidy levels are different for each familiy and depend on your individual circumstances. Child Care Subsidy is determined by an activity test based on three key factors:
The activity level of both parents
Your combined family income
The type of care required
A board range of activities will meet the activity test requirements, including paid work, being self-employed, doing unpaid work in the family business, studying and volunteering.
